A high-resolution modeling study of the Western Iberian Margin mean and seasonal upper ocean circulation ArchiMer
Nolasco, Rita; Pires, Ana; Cordeiro, Nuno; Le Cann, Bernard; Dubert, Jesus.
The mean seasonal hydrography and circulation of the Western Iberian Margin (WIM) are studied by means of a high-resolution configuration of the Regional Oceanic Modeling System. A comparison of 5-year model averages for January and July with climatological datasets shows a general good agreement in the reproduction of the mean water mass properties and hydrographic distribution. We find that there is a prevailing tendency for slope poleward flow at about 80-100 km offshore at all latitudes from the surface to 1,500 m with strong vertical coupling. This northward flow, which is mainly along slope and amounts up to 8-10 cm s(-1), exhibits several mean flow recirculation regions on its way and evidences of an offshore pathway of poleward flow. Transports at...

A Long-Lasting Mode Water Vortex in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Reverdin, Gilles; Gascard, Jean-claude; Le Cann, Bernard; Prieur, Loic; Assenbaum, Michel; Lherminier, Pascale.
An anticyclonic mode water vortex and its environment were investigated from November 2000 to September 2001 in the northeast Atlantic (near 43.5 degrees N, 15 degrees-19 degrees W) with neutrally buoyant drifting floats, moored current meters, satellite altimetric sea surface height, and several hydrological surveys and sections. These observations reveal a coherent inner core (similar to 0 km in diameter) made of very oxygenated northeast Atlantic central waters (11 degrees-12.7 degrees C and 35.5-35.7 on the 1978 practical salinity scale) from 150 m down to about 750-m depth. The core presents high relative vorticity (up to approximately -0.5 times the Coriolis frequency f) within at least 10 km of its center, near 400-700 m. Peak velocity along the...

Circulation on the shelf and the upper slope of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Le Boyer, Arnaud; Charria, Guillaume; Le Cann, Bernard; Lazure, Pascal; Marie, Louis.
Here, we used measurements taken with an array of 10 acoustic Doppler current profilers deployed from July 2009 to August 2011 to describe the tidally filtered circulation over the shelf and upper slope on the French side off the French coasts of the Bay of Biscay. The measurements provided an overview of the shelf and slope circulation throughout the entire water column over a large range of spatial and time scales. The average circulation over the shelf and upper slope of the Bay of Biscay was poleward following the topography with a speed of the order of 3 cm s(-1). This average circulation had marked seasonal variability. In summer, the currents were equatorward on the outer shelf near surface. Deeper in the water column, the flow remained poleward. In...

Evidence of Mediterranean Water dipole collision in the Gulf of Cadiz ArchiMer
L'Hegaret, Pierre; Carton, Xavier; Ambar, Isabel; Menesguen, Claire; Hua, Bach Lien; Cherubin, Laurent; Aguiar, Ana; Le Cann, Bernard; Daniault, Nathalie; Serra, Nuno.
A collision of Mediterranean Water dipoles in the Gulf of Cadiz is studied here, using data from the MedTop and Semane experiments. First, a Mediterranean Water eddy (meddy) was surveyed hydrologically in November 2000 southwest of Cape Saint Vincent. Then, this meddy drifted northeastward from this position, accompanied by a cyclone (detected only via altimetry), thus forming a first dipole. In February 2001, a dipole of Mediterranean Water was measured hydrologically just after its formation near Portimão Canyon. This second dipole drifted southwestward. The western and eastern meddies had hydrological radii of about 22 and 25 km, respectively, with corresponding temperature and salinity maxima of (13.45°C, 36.78) and (11.40°C, 36.40). Rafos float...

Interactions of surface and deep anticyclonic eddies in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Carton, Xavier; Le Cann, Bernard; Serpette, Alain; Dubert, Jesus.
In 1990, satellite observations revealed that an anticyclonic surface eddy (a SWODDY, for Slope Water Oceanic eDDY) followed a cycloidal trajectory north of the Iberian coast in the Bay of Biscay. To understand the mechanisms underlying such a trajectory, we study the evolution of an idealized surface eddy in a two-layer flat-bottom quasi-geostrophic model. The effect of several processes is studied, notably the presence of deep anticyclonic vorticity. This deep vorticity may result either from the tilting of the swoddy itself, or from the presence of an anticyclonic eddy of different origins, such as a meddy (Mediterranean Water EDDY). We also study the influence of a zonal coast south of the swoddy, via the "mirror effect". Firstly, a point-vortex model...

Lagrangian circulation of the North Atlantic Central Water over the abyssal plain and continental slopes of the Bay of Biscay: description of selected mesoscale features ArchiMer
Serpette, A; Le Cann, Bernard; Colas, Francois.
Between 1994 and 2001, several experiments (ARCANE, SEFOS, INTERAFOS) were conducted to directly measure the general and mesoscale Lagrangian circulations over the Bay of Biscay abyssal plain and slopes. Two levels (~100 m and ~450 m) were selected to cover the North Atlantic Central Water range. Two types of Lagrangian instruments, drogued surface drifters tracked by satellite (Surdrift) and acoustically tracked subsurface floats (Rafos and Marvor), were used. Overall, more than 36 instrument-years were collected in the Bay of Biscay region (43-49°N, 01-12°W). The weak general circulation in the Bay of Biscay is seen to be highly influenced by the occurrence of several mesoscale coherent features, notably slope currents and eddies, and these affect the...

Large diurnal bottom temperature oscillations around the Saint Pierre and Miquelon archipelago ArchiMer
Lazure, Pascal; Le Cann, Bernard; Bezaud, Marion.
Here, we report large, near-daily oscillations of near-bottom temperatures, with ranges of up to 11.5 °C at depths of 30–60 m in September 2011 around the Saint Pierre and Miquelon archipelago (south-eastern Canada). These oscillations were detected on velocity and temperature profiles from moorings in Miquelon Bay and on an array of near-bottom temperature sensors around the archipelago. The oscillations coincided with the seasonal stratification period. In addition to their remarkable range, they exhibited a near-diurnal period centred on the O1 tidal component (~26 h), contrasting with the dominant semi-diurnal sea-level periodicity in the area. They appear to be the manifestation of an internal wave, triggered by the diurnal surface tide and trapped by...

Observed mean and mesoscale upper ocean circulation in the midlatitude northeast Atlantic ArchiMer
Le Cann, Bernard; Assenbaum, Michel; Gascard, Jean-claude; Reverdin, Gilles.
Lagrangian instruments and altimetry data are used to investigate the upper ( 0 to similar to 500 m) mean and mesoscale circulations in a region of the midlatitude northeast Atlantic (36 degrees - 47 degrees N, 13 degrees - 23 degrees W), a formation and subduction area of Subpolar Mode Water. Lagrangian data were collected between September 2000 and September 2001 with isobaric subsurface floats, totaling 34.0 float years, and surface drifting buoys, totaling 27.9 buoy years. The near-surface ( 0 - 100 m) mean circulation is dominated by two weak ( similar to 5 cm/s) eastward currents which veer southward in the domain. In the 100- to 500-m-deep layer, these eastward mean currents retroflect westward and form two anticyclonic circulation cells, opened to...

South-Eastern Bay of Biscay eddy-induced anomalies and their effect on chlorophyll distribution ArchiMer
Caballero, Ainhoa; Rubio, Anna; Ruiz, Simon; Le Cann, Bernard; Testor, Pierre; Mader, Julien; Hernandez, Carlos.
The analysis of deep-water glider hydrographic and fluorescence data, together with satellite measurements provides a new insight into eddy-induced anomalies within the South-Eastern Bay of Biscay, during summer. Two cyclonic eddies and a SWODDY have been observed in different glider transects and by means of different sources of satellite data. Vertical profiles reveal complex structures (characteristic of the second baroclinic mode): upward/downward displacement of the seasonal/permanent thermocline in the case of X13 and the opposite thermocline displacements in the case of the cyclones. This is a typical behaviour of mode-water and “cyclonic thinny” eddies. A qualitative analysis of the vertical velocities in the anticyclone indicates that though...

Vertical particle flux in the northeast Atlantic Ocean (POMME experiment) ArchiMer
Guieu, C; Roy-barman, M; Leblond, N; Jeandel, C; Souhaut, M; Le Cann, Bernard; Dufour, A; Bournot, C.
In the framework of the Programme Ocean Multidisciplinaire Meso Echelle (POMME) experiment, a 1.5 year record (February 2001-June 2002) of downward particle flux at 400 m and 1000 m was measured by sediment traps at four moorings located in the northeast Atlantic between 39 degrees-43 degrees N and 17 degrees-19 degrees W. Thorium-230 was used to estimate sediment trap efficiency, revealing values ranging from 18.5 to 55%. The lowest trapping efficiency was observed for the trap having experienced the highest currents. Significant interannual variability between 2001 and 2002 was clearly linked to the differences observed in the mixed layer depth. At some sites, particulate organic carbon (POC) export was higher (up to a factor of 1.6) during summer than...

Wind-induced barotropic oscillations around the Saint Pierre and Miquelon archipelago (North-west Atlantic) ArchiMer
Bezaud, Marion; Lazure, Pascal; Le Cann, Bernard.
We investigate the nearly barotropic oscillations recently observed around the Saint Pierre and Miquelon (SPM) archipelago. They were recorded by two ADCPs at about 30 m depth during winter and spring 2014. These oscillations were the dominant signal on the currents with a period of 2 to 4 days. Our analysis shows that these oscillations were triggered by the wind. To investigate these oscillations, a 2D numerical model was implemented at a regional scale. The results from a realistic simulation confirmed the impact of wind forcing on ocean dynamics in the region. They also showed amplification of these oscillations around SPM, particularly in the north-west of the archipelago and near Burin Peninsula. Analyses suggested the influence of continental shelf...
